Multiplication and Division Key Ideas:
5 X 3 means 5 groups of 3
3 X 5 means 3 groups of 5
15 ÷ 5 means 15 split into 5 groups
15 ÷ 3 means 15 split into 3 groups
**When using an array to represent a multiplication or division problem, the number of rows represents the number of groups.

Theme 2: Ask Questions
Big Idea- Asking questions help you understand a new idea. In order to ask a quality question, you first have to know the main idea of a passage or section. The main idea is what the paragraph/section is mostly about. Your question should be related to the main idea.

Review:: Making Connections
Big Idea- When you make connections, you connect the ideas from a reading to what you already know.

Grammar: Compound subjects and predicates
Compound subjects- two or more subjects
Example: Sara and Susan went to the movie. (Sara and Susan)
Compound predicate- two or more predicates
Example: Sara went to the movie and ate popcorn. (went to the movie and ate popcorn)
Grammar: Compound Sentences
Two complete sentences combined with a conjunction (AND, BUT, OR)
Example: Sara and Susan went to the movie, and they got popcorn!

Word Study week 1: Consonant Blends
Bid Idea: two or more consonants that blend together, but you still hear all the consonant sounds. Example: West (st) and drain (dr)
Word Study week 2: Word Families
Big Idea: Words that rhyme and have the same vowel and consonant ending. Example: train and rain

Writing: Biography
Big Idea- Biographies are pieces written about a person. They contain facts and important details about the person’s life!

Below you will find a summary of the skills from our first reading theme. All of these skills are taught in the classroom during our reading block! The theme 1 reading test will be on Wednesday, September 6th!

Theme 1: Making Connections
Big Idea- When you make connections, you connect the ideas from a reading to what you already know.

Grammar- Subjects and Predicates
Big Idea: The subject of the sentence it the “who or what” the sentence is about. The predicate of the sentence has the verb and tells “what the subject is doing.”
Example: The boy ran to get the mail.
Subject = The boy
Predicate = ran to get the mail.
Example: She is very happy.
Subject = She
Predicate = is very happy

Target Skill- Hyperbole
Big Idea: A hyperbole is an exaggeration.
Example: The park has more trees than a jungle.

Writing- Story
Big Idea: A story has characters, a setting, a plot, and often a theme (lesson the character/reader learns)!

Theme 1 writing pieces:
Humorous Fiction and Question and Answer
*Normally, your student would write a piece for each of these genres. However, since this is the first theme, the students are only responsible for a question and answer piece. These pieces were written during our writing block and will be turned in after they are published (on September 6th after the theme 1 reading test).
