Science/Social Studies: After conducting the colored water and celery experiment and the washable marker dot experiment, we are experts at the scientific method! This week we will be switching from science to social studies. Even though we have had a blast learning about the scientific method, we are excited to start our “Communities” theme! πŸ™‚

Agent Training Day

3l books 3m agent

We had a great first “theme day” today in third grade. We practiced reading with Nate the Great, an agent who helps his friends. We practiced math while deciphering codes, and even learned some new vocabulary when we made our Agent Handbooks. The third grade was bound and determined to get back our greatest treasure. OUR BOOKS!

Back to School Night

We are so excited to see all of you again this Thursday night. Remember, there are two sessions; one from 6:30-6:55 and one from 7:00- 7:30. Please bring the back to school packet from open house with you for your reference. Also, come with any questions you have about routines and policies so far. As you can see in the pictures, our students are working hard to prepare for you as well.

Spelling

Every Monday, your child will receive a spelling word list. They will be tested on these words every Friday. To help your child practice their words throughout the week, they will have a weekly spelling worksheet. This worksheet will go home every Tuesday and will be due every Thursday. This week only the spelling worksheet will be graded. The test we give on Friday will only be a practice test. πŸ™‚

NOTE: There are six additional lines on the spelling word list. The first two lines contain that week’s “personal words” and the last four contain that week’s challenge words. The personal words will be graded; however, the challenge words will only be counted for extra credit (only up to 100%).

*Reminder: We will be discussing more items like this at Back to School Night (Parents Only) this Thursday from 6:30-7:30. We hope to see everyone there! πŸ™‚

Finding a good book!

I pick

Choosing a good book can be a challenge, but not when you follow the “I PICk” method! You have a Purpose, you are Interested in the topic of the book, you can Comprehend and understand what you are reading, and you Know most of the words. Picking a book is a lot like choosing a pair of shoes to wear! πŸ™‚ If you were going for a run, you would want running shoes, not flip flops. Reading should be fun, so make sure you choose a book you are interested in. If you weren’t interested in soccer, you probably wouldn’t own any soccer cleats! You also need shoes that fit just right. If a pair of shoes are too tight, wearing them will start to hurt your feet; if you read too easy of a book, you will get bored! If a pair of shoes are too big, you will trip and fall as you walk; if you read a book that is too hard, you will “trip and stumble” over the words.

3M picks books L reading

Today we explored our classroom libraries and everyone found a chapter book! Be sure to have your child share what book they chose today. πŸ™‚

Classroom Rules

school rules

Being a ROYAL means: Respecting Others, Respecting Yourself, and Respecting Learning! The examples listed above are school wide rules for DGS. Take a look in the “About Us” section to see what 3L and 3M came up with for our own classroom rules!

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum

Yesterday we read Chrysanthemum to remind us that we need to think about other peoples’ feelings. While reading this story, we crumpled up a paper mouse every time Chrysanthemum was made fun of or teased. At the end of the story, we tried to make the paper as flat as we could, but we realized we couldn’t get all of the crumples completely out of the paper. This was a great reminder to always respect others!

First Day Fun!

We had an amazing first day! Take a look below at some of the fun things we did today!

youre it 2

Youre it

Third grade has PE first thing in the morning (7:50-8:15). Although we didn’t stay the whole time this morning, we did get a chance to meet Mr. Carter and play Everybody’s It!

Howrd B.

Next, we read Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to his Heart. In this story, Howard is made fun of because of his love for dancing.

howard revised

To start a discussion on using kind words, we played with our food! πŸ˜‰ We learned that once you say something, you can’t take it back!

line revised

After that we thought it was time to take a break! Before we headed out to recess, we watched the halftime show of the Ohio State Buckeyes. We were blown away by their ability to stay in line while playing an instrument! When recess was over, we took some time to develop our mission statements (checkout our About Us section).

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch!

L tshirt

We took it easy after recess. We read part of Judy Moody and decorated t-shirts to show all the fun things we did this summer.

L reading

Next, we finally did what everyone was waiting for…. we got to work! As a class, we brainstormed what good reading looks like and sounds like. After we had our list ready to go, we gave it a try! πŸ™‚

day 1

We ended our day with a superhero themed assembly!
We hope everyone enjoyed the first day of school as much as we did!

Water Bottles and Snacks!

Water bottles are okay to bring to school as long as: they only contain water, and they have a spill proof lid. (*Water bottles must be filled up at home. The students will not be allowed to fill them up throughout the day) :)Also, your child may bring a healthy snack to eat every morning. (*Reminder: classrooms are nut free)
